Have you ever wished your son came with a manual? Parenting is a challenge, and the challenges of the teen years are unique. The teen years also hold unique opportunities, as kids explore who they are and who they want to become. Statistically, people make some of the biggest decisions of their lives in adolescence or the late teen years.

A rock-solid relationship with your teen is one of the most important things you can give them—making you a key source of strength and guidance for them as they make life’s biggest decisions. But knowing how to relate and build that relationship isn’t always easy.

Whether you’re starting to feel on “shaky ground” relationally with your teen, or hoping to gain relational skills to stay solid, this 4-day family program will give you and your teen practical tools for improving the relationships in your family—all while enjoying the beauty of the Colorado mountains in a safe, Jesus-focused environment. Reconnect and grow with God, with your spouse, and with your teenagers.

Kate has been at Seeds since May of 2024. She was drawn to Seeds because of its focus on Jesus, families, and long-lasting transformation. After working as summer staff for the 2024 season, Kate returned to Seeds as full-time staff in Outreach and Program Development. She is excited to adventure with students and families in the backcountry while also designing new programs and strengthening aftercare for families to continue what they have learned from Seeds at home. Kate is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she grew up, fell in love with Jesus, completed her MSW, and worked with families in multiple mental health programs. Kate loves white water rafting, hiking, and making delicious food. She is certified as a Wilderness First Responder (WFR).

Peyton and his wife Becca are outdoor enthusiasts and have a passion to see people transformed through the Holy Spirit. They have experienced how the wilderness provides space for spiritual disciplines to flourish and for people to be shaped by God. Wilderness ministry has married their love for adventure with the call to make disciples. Currently, Peyton serves at-risk youth through after-school programs in Western Colorado while Becca works as a nurse. They volunteer in the youth ministry at their church and serve at SEEDS with great expectation for how the Kingdom will come in their midst! Peyton and Becca love rock climbing, trail running, and biking.

What You can Expect

Here are some of the things you and your teen will experience on this retreat:

  • Relational growth, as you learn and practice how to listen and how to speak 
  • Personal growth, through spiritual practices and reflection on your inner world (thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and hopes)
  • Connection with God and with one another in the beautiful mountains of Colorado
  • And parents will learn keys to help their adolescent navigate the transition to healthy adulthood (and all the rebellion, behaviors, hurts, fears, and big emotions along the way)

The wilderness setting of this family retreat is very intentional. We have found that wilderness speeds up transformation and connection in multiple ways (see this post for more details). Seeds retreats are facilitated by trained guides who are passionate about helping families grow in wholeness, who love Jesus, and who have lots of wilderness savvy (and certifications).

Upon arrival, teens and parents will join their own peer groups—teens will head straight into the backcountry to process life and emotions together, while parents do their own work (facilitated by Seeds’ director) at a retreat center. Families will be reunited for one overnight together in the wilderness.
